LIVERPOOL: "THE POOL OF LIFE"

 WRITINGS

"I had a dream. I found myself in a dirty, sooty city. It was night and winter; and dark and raining. I was in Liverpool. In the centre was a round pool; in the middle of it a small island. On it stood a single tree; a magnolia in a shower of reddish blossoms. It was as though the tree stood in the sunlight, and were, at the same time, the source of light. Everything was extremely unpleasant; black and opaque - just as I felt then. But I had a vision of unearthly beauty . . . and that’s why I was able to live at all.
Liverpool is the pool of life."

Carl Jung, Philosopher, 1961

The city waking up

There is a spirit in this city that is contagious. You can put it down (many people do) but it will pick itself up, dust the dirt off and stand taller than ever before...

For me, she is home. I was born there, I grew up there, I left the city but she will never leave me.

The people, the music, the energy, everything it stands for, all that it has given to the world, its unrivaled beauty and its notorious dark side. Very few cities in the world can boast what Liverpool possesses and consider that it's just a small port town in the North of England, that's a big statement, but one that can't be denied.

Liverpool Vision - The Mayor of Liverpool's economic development company say it best:

Liverpool is a city like no other. From world famous architecture and magnificent free museums to music legends revolutionising popular culture, Liverpool has always been a hub of creativity. Through spectacular festivals, dramatic sporting attractions and unique art it continues to be a gateway for UK culture, attracting millions of visitors every year.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, Liverpool is the World Capital of Pop Music. It is impossible to imagine Liverpool without music – or music without Liverpool. Birthplace of The Beatles, the world’s most famous pop group, the city has produced more UK number one hits than any other city: 56 and counting.

Liverpool has a sporting reputation to rival any city in the world. Sport, along with music, is the beating heart of this city. The success of our football teams has made the name ‘Liverpool’ famous around the world, and it is the UK’s most successful footballing city. It is also home to the Grand National, the world’s greatest steeplechase at Aintree.

The Liverpool City Region is also England’s golf coast boasting 40 courses, including seven of Championship status, four of which have been named in Golf World’s Top 200 courses in the World 2011. The Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, and Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s regularly play host to the Open Championship, Women’s British Open, Seniors British Open and the Amateurs Championship.

Liverpool is also a UNESCO World Heritage City, placing it alongside historical and architectural treasures such as the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids at Giza and the Great Wall of China.

Liverpool is Europe’s most successful ever Capital of Culture boasting more galleries than Florence and more live theatre and music venues than Dublin. Home to Tate Liverpool and the Walker Art Gallery, the city hosts major touring exhibitions from artists such as Picasso, Magritte Warhol, Monet and Van Gogh alongside The Liverpool Biennial - Europe’s second biggest contemporary visual arts event showcasing groundbreaking work in locations across the city.

The award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the UK’s oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra and has been at the heart of Liverpool’s cultural life since 1840. The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is the classical counterpoint to the city’s many contemporary music venues and the visually stunning Echo Arena.

Everyone lives in Liverpool. I guarantee that you know someone who lives there.

There is that couple you know that are very much in love but are unhappy because they are just about scraping through each month with what money they have.

That guy you used to go to school with lives there, he's changed a lot and he's actually quite a cool fella now; you never had any problems you just never really spoke or hung with the same people.

Your mate who always has no money but still goes out every weekend and the one who you know has some stashed away, but just never comes out anymore.

The girl you've always had a secret crush on; the girl whose Facebook statuses really annoy you; The girl whose boyfriend doesn't like you because you and his girl had history; The girl who you've seen around town but don't know what her name is and know nothing about but want to hear her story, and the other one who just doesn't shut up and you wish you never bumped in to.

The fella who is so obsessed with sport that you wonder what he would do if his team ever stopped playing; The lad who you know could do more with his life but pisses his potential into the urinal of the same bar he's been going to for the past 10 years; The guy who just fucking rocks! You don't even know how you know him but you always say "Alright mate" and wonder what he does because he just oozes 'coolness';

A mix of you, me and every character we've ever met or cared about. That's why people love the place...It feels like home.
